CZWG - Flashback #01

My CZWG adventure is going over, good times and bad times behind me, but no doubty it was a very good experience being here! Two projects below, as the flashback: Canada Water Library (the project which I also participated) and Maggie's Centre in Nottingham, both successful.

NOWA HUTA OF THE FUTURE, MASTERPLAN 2012

NOWA HUTA OF THE FUTURE, International competition entry, the project in collaboration with Matt Lally (Matrix Partnership, London) and Richard Penman (RAKU Design, London) providing regeneration of post industrial areas of Krakow - Nowa Huta.

I had the expectations, especially that I'd say that the team was a dream team. Matt Lally is the director of a proper company, and his experience was very dear, also great designing skills. Richard Penman - I know him from CZWG, as a very solid person, and also a great designer, he involved couple of great ideas which gave the project a character. Competitions are competition. Could we have spent more time on graphic? or maybe... ? Probably yes we could, but our proposal had a strong and realistic character basing on existing survey. Basically, it made sense:)

NOWA HUTA PRZYSZLOSCI - praca konkursowa we wspólpracy z Matt'em Lally (Matrix Partnership, London) oraz Richard'em Penman (RAKU Design, London), zakladajaca regeneracje terenów Kombinatu w krakowskiej Nowej Hucie.

Włoski modernizm w Etiopii 1936-41 | Italian modernism in Ethiopia 1936-41

Addis Ababa (fot. zpiotro)

Ethiopia is the only one country in Africa which has never been colonized. Since Italy started colonial ambitions, Ethiopia was on their top list, seeming as an easy target. They tried in 1892 but were beaten by the forces powered by the king Menelik II (and Jah obviously). In 1936 - Italians using mustard gas didn't give any chances to brave Rastafarians and the Fascist-Babylonian evil empire took over the capital - Addis Ababa (but not the whole country). They had big plans and ambitions regarding their new "Italian Eastern Africa", and within 5 years of their presence, they built lot of modern impressive buildings. Also rearranged the towns, widening streets, building piazza's and public buildings around. Here're some my photos also published later by Ronet.pl

Srinagar - house boats on the lake | Srinagar - domy-lodzie na wodzie

House boats are the flag symbol of Srinaghar. They were in our minds before we arrived to the town. We knew where we wanted to stay. When we get off from the car from Jammu, one man came to us and offered some of his boats. Unfortunately the standard of those ones didn't satisfied us and the price was not worth that. But we were pretty stacked as he made all his neighbours to tell us that all the boats around were taken. he took a ride with us just to prove us that further searching is pointless, but we decided to be a real pain in the ass and kept going, and asking everyone we saw from the boat. All the owners are in a community, and support each others, but one broke the rule as he realized that the one by us was very naughty, and invited us to his boat. The one who was with us didn't like it. Probably not realizing that in the now days all tourists can share information in internet so he was slightly cutting the branch he was seating on. But that was already the past. We have never seen him again.
The boat we entered was bigger than the others around, we entered through the stairs to the terrace on side, which was linked to the other terrace in the forehead of the boat. The outer terrace was linked to the living room and living room to the dining room. The interior looked pretty posh, in the (British) imperial/Indian style, dominated by red colour (carpets, cushions..) with some golden patterns. Also outside, the boat had many wooden ornaments, also in the British imperial/Indian style.
The boat man was very kind to us, didn't have any available rooms on his boat but it was late and offered us a coach in the living room just for one night, prepared a dinner and breakfast next day, and found a boat which was only for us (three of us) next day. He erased all the bad impression from the day before.
Next day in the morning we moved to the boat nearby, personal one, only for us. We were waving everyday to the man who welcomed us first night. Our new host was also very nice, older man told us a lot about Kashmiri history and how day suffered pretty recently, now all they want is peace......
The boat was also decorated by wooden ornaments outside and posh interior in the British imperial/oriental style with red dominated colour and golden patterns carpets and cushions. But a little little bit pourer than the previous one. The layout was the same the outer terrace - living room - dining room - corridor to the bed rooms. We spent most of the time in the social space - living room and on the outer terrace. Sometimes we have guests, actually everyday. Young chaps from the boatman family were coming to watch TV to our living room, sometimes we had to tell them "guys we would like to stay by ourselves, privately", or "guys, go to bed!" Interesting that each light bulb had a separate switcher, there were many light bulbs.... many wall lamps and one chandelier. The structure of the boat was pretty simple. Flat floating base and house box on it. Analysing the balance and more advanced sailing terminology, that boat is only for quiet steady waters, couldn't be completely used on seas, or even rivers with bigger waves might get that one in troubles. However the base was pretty wide to keep the balance in terms of size (not in terms of weight - wing wise), but the wooden structure looked weak an sharp edge is needed for any further sailing on a river or so. The name "house boat" describes it perfectly. All life in the same place.
All the house boats create a town with streets, main square, active frontages etc. The water is pretty shallow about 1 m depth, but small boats are still needed for the transport purpose. The water town layout is very organic, most of towns have orthogonal grid of streets, measured precisely. Water town has a huge open space which can be compared to a market square. There are also many narrow lanes, which you can cross by boats, colourful shop facades, opened to the water, real town, but water instead of paving. Thinking about Venice? Yes, sort of... When you hit the bank and get off the boat to the mainland, the magic world disappears. Welcome back to the reality. Cars, paving, walking pedestrians... it was a very nice staying in the water town in Srinaghar.

No Thoughts No Gravity - Live & Unsigned competition

Zespół No Thoughts No Gravity z nowym perkusistą - David'em Hippel,  wziął udział w konkursie Live & Unsigned (Na żywo i niezakontraktowani) organizowanym przez Sky TV.

No Thoughts No Gravity with the new drummer - David Hippel, participated in the Live and Unsigned competition run by Sky TV. The songs of NTNG are nice so Phil thought that would be nice if more people knew them. I'm slowly realizing the show business works:) At the beginning (lowest level) we were judged by how we look like, move, dance, how many friends brought (8 each one to pay for the ticket). Last audience voting - we lost with nice looking girl band - good luck girls! Phil wrote a little bit about that on the NTNG blog:

A oto nasz występ... było jak było, nie mniej jednak to było pewne wydarzenie:

Flashback & No Thoughts No Gravity - back to the business

After a significant break, I'm coming back to the music, put an advert on gumtree and joined to the nice rocky band called Flashback (www.flashbackonline.co.uk). Week after I received an email from Phil Hudson from No Thoughts No Gravity. I forgot to check out the music he sent to me. After remaining I listen the stuff on www.myspace.com/nothoughtsnogravity . Wow!  It was great! Modern sound, very architectural:) I decided to play in two bands.

Tydzień później napisał do mnie Phil Hudson z zespołu No Thoughts No Gravity. Wow! To było super! Nowoczesne, bardzo architektoniczne brzmienie! Zdecydowałem się grać w dwóch zespołach

Music in Architecture | Architecture in Music

Me and my friend - Soneil Inayat (Musician/Composer/Script writer) did a competition concerning the stuff we like:) MUSIC IN ARCHITECTURE | ARCHITECTURE IN MUSIC

Here's the video and description below:

Music is a space. The architectural concept creates an interesting space where one can feel the composition. Being surrounded by sounds and physical items one must feel a unity. Music gives very individual feelings. That’s why the space is very much at hand (everything is close) and that’s why the general size of the installation is relatively small. The space is created by two openwork walls – timber columns and two existing solid walls. It generates a kind of echo effect, to support the electronic composition would. Timber columns and a piece of material from the ceiling soften the echo effect by absorbing a little bit of the sound, but not everything.

There are three main parts of the composition: strong beat of 4/4 rhythm which changes after half song to double beat 4/4, bass line containing one half note and two quarter notes and calm, long, relatively steady leading tune. Simple scheme containing three most popular instruments: guitar, bass and drums, but proceeded by computer.
The architecture is presented in the same way: strong rhythm of openwork walls of columns, dominating figure inside representing bass line as the soul of the installation and a light material dropping down from the ceiling as the leading tune.

Many people say that bass is the most important instrument in the band. Bass is a soul. The structure representing bass line is a dominating figure in the whole installation. Five metal rings fixed together by transparent folia or transparent sticking tape, hang to the columns on side by transparent lines about 0.8 m above the ground. This tube structure, would encourage people want to look inside. And that’s like looking into a soul towards the players at the end - on the other side. There is another option in place, a bass speaker inside. It requires further engineering works and redesigning the structure.

Five rings create four spaces in between that relates to the rhythm of the bass tune. Two last rings are hanging higher. It’ s according to the changes in notes – from G to A. Frontal shape of the rings is related to the transcription of the bass line in notes. Listening the composition one can follow the ring formation according to the tune. The hang structure by thin transparent (strong enough) lines crossing the hanging material fixed to the ceiling. It’s like a spider net, allegory of bass mission in a band, as cement that puts all the parts of the composition together.

Solo instruments are completely free, they meet the rhythm and the bass line, but generally – they are free. Keith Richards said that the solo instrument can always be drunk, but bass and drums must be always sober.
A light material from the top dropping down from the ceiling represents the leading tune of the composition. The main melody is like a light material, flowing from somewhere to somewhere. That’s why I decided to use a material. According to the sound silver silk is preferable.

Relatively linear drop down level of the hanging piece represents steady leading tune, the chord changes after couple of bars. The additional feelings give the vibrations from the speakers, which are placed on the top above the material. They are fixed to the additional structures and spanned between the columns and from an engineering point of
view is an additional bracing. And everything is not seen from the performing level. We can only see the waving material. Music is a personal travel following different sound stages, sounds, like a tunnel. I could put as many columns as we have drumbeats in the composition, but I chose the most representative part, which contains every bit of the composition. The free space inside represents the beginning of the composition when we hear drums at the begging, then we need to wait for next elements. That’s the invitation.

Choosing the materials, size 125x125 mm of timber columns, steel and artificial wrap of bass line structure and silver silk represent the lightness, balance and tone of the composition, electronic and modified by computer. Drums sound natural, that’s why I propose wood to make the columns, but the computer modifies them too – that’s why I suggest painting them black. The leading tune is light as a silk; the silver colour represents the computer effect. The architectural installation is optimistic as the major scale of the composition, but nostalgic too and it’s caused by the elements from a minor scale. That’s the general impression that I think I achieved.
Zbigniew Piotrowicz: Architect /
www.piotrow.prv.pl
My cooperation with architect was good. We choose the most spacious composition among my pervious ones and basing on the same feelings I did something that way. My composition “Magic Bullet Theory” is a space with the elements on many levels. The main challenge was to create a piece of music that represents space and structure. I imagined that the best way to represent this would be to make a sound that both created a solid structure with a hollow depth much like the functionality of an architectural space.

My first album! A proper demo mixed up!

I just finished mixing the material which I played with Soneil Inayat and Renato Csatich. It's live improvisations committed in 2009-2010 during long session in various studios in North London, now the best moments among hours of long improvisations were selected and put together into a solid demo material. Yes that's the base. I'm open to do it again and record properly. Yes we have a good demo, I could show it even to Miles Davis and Thom Yorke. Check it out! Our crazy stuff!

Właśnie skończyłem miksować materiał nagrany podczas wielogodzinnych improwizacji z Soneil'em Inayat oraz Renato Csatich. Nagrania zostały dokonane w latach 2009-2010 podczas długich sesji w różnych studiach w północnym Londynie. Spośród wielogodzinnego improwizowania zostały wybrane najlepsze momenty i złożone w całość.
